AP tests find drugs in drinking water

An article came out today on the ABC news website detailing a water study done by the Associated Press, and the results are downright frightening. The AP investigation revealed that the drinking water supply in a large number of highly populated areas has been contaminated with pharmaceutical drugs, sex hormones, herbicides, and caffeine.

Other low points in the article include-

-Arlington, Texas, acknowledged that traces of a pharmaceutical were detected in its drinking water but cited post-9/11 security concerns in refusing to identify the drug.

- officials in Emporia, Kan., refused to answer AP’s questions, also citing post-9/11 issues

-Ask the pharmaceutical industry whether the contamination of water supplies is a problem, and officials will tell you no. “Based on what we now know, I would say we find there’s little or no risk from pharmaceuticals in the environment to human health,” said microbiologist Thomas White, a consultant for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

-Officials in Philadelphia said testing there discovered 56 pharmaceuticals or byproducts in treated drinking water, including medicines for pain, infection, high cholesterol, asthma, epilepsy, mental illness and heart problems. Sixty-three pharmaceuticals or byproducts were found in the city’s watersheds.

Now, what possible “post 9-11″ security risk could there in be identifying what drugs were in the water?

Considering they believe the general public to be stupid (which in some cases I agree), are there any chemicals in the water we haven’t been told about?

These people are public servants, refusal to answer questions pertaining to harmful chemicals in public water supplies should be grounds to termination.

While bottled water is still dangerous, it’s obviously a better choice than taking chances with whatever happens to come out of your faucet.

Update: List of chemicals found in major metro area water supplies.

  1. You know that old saying, “Don’t drink the water”……..? What else haven’t they told us. I can almost bet they are going to break it to us a little bit at a time what is REALLY in the water. We’d be better off drinking beer.

  2. I am beginning to think that, the powers that be, and all of their great wisdom, are making up these so called tests and results, claiming that our water is polluted, only in the grand scheme of things, frightening the public, thus minimizing the amount of water consumed on a day to day basis! Stop and think about it, if Lake mead was so polluted with drugs and so forth, why in 2006, did the SNWA, as well as LVWD, agree to the increase of water supply to California? Obviously this is an increase of electricity, but thats not all! In my field of work, I do alot of construction, and meet fellow inspectors. Some of which who worked for the state of Ca. Those unnamed associates, exclaimed to me about the man made water storage facility in Ca. Where do you think the water came from??? The sky??? So in conclusion, I think its just another lie, ( yes again ) from our beloved government!! Go figure!!! I could be mistaken, but is it possible??? Anything is these days.
