Congressmen riding in style on the taxpayer’s dime

WCBSTV released an article detailing the high priced cars that are being leased by Congressmen at taxpayers expense. Among the many lowpoints from the article:

- Congressman Charles Rangel was recently seen getting out of his Cadillac DeVille, which he leases for $774 per month.

- Congressman Gregory Meeks was recently seen waiting for Congressman John Conyers to step out of Meeks’ Lexus LS460, which Meeks leases for $998 per month.

- Congressman Ed Towns of Brooklyn used to lease a Lincoln for $845 per month, but switched to a 2008 mini-SUV made by Lincoln, the MKX, which costs $715 per month

Now get a load of this, in response to questions about this fleecing of the taxpayers, Rep. Charles Rangel had this to say:

“I could probably find something for … one of those red cars and then I think my constituents would say, ‘With all the money that he gets, this is the respect he shows us?”

He also dropped this load of BS in a released statement: “When I’m in New York, my car is my office. I use it to conduct Congressional business. It really pleases me that (my constituents) appreciate driving in a comfortable car, especially the senior citizens. The car isn’t just a vehicle for getting around; it’s an important part of doing my job and my constituents appreciate it.”

So he is pleased that the taxpayers think he should be driving around in a nice comfy car. No wonder it was a released statement, no one could possibly have openly said that and kept a straight face at the same time.

Now the real kick in the butt to taxpayers: The annual salary of each Congressional representative is $165,200.

Yes, thats right, they make $165,200 per year and still stick taxpayers with the bill for carting their overinflated heads around.

One Response to “Congressmen riding in style on the taxpayer’s dime”

  1. Right, three Democrats have the finger pointed at them. I’m sure all the Republicans are walking, biking, or riding mass transit. Pretty fair and even-handed reporting, I’d say.
